Mecca Neighborhood Park and Greening

Mecca Neighborhood Park and Greening Project

 Project Overview

About the project

The County of Riverside is pleased to announce that the State of California awarded a grant to plant shade trees along streets in downtown Mecca and improve a small park located at the corner of Hammond Road and 2nd Street, as shown on the map on the right.

Will every property receive a tree?

Unfortunately, trees cannot be planted in certain locations due to various factors, including overhead wires, insufficient clearance from street lights, driveways, intersection corners, or existing trees; or simply a lack of available space. Trees may not be planted if underground utility pipes are found during the digging process.

Who will maintain the trees?

The ongoing water for the trees will be provided by the County at no cost to property owners. Trees will be trimmed by the County on an as-needed basis.

The trees will be small when planted, but in a number of years they will grow to their full shade potential.

GRANT PROGRAM

The State of California Natural Resources Agency administers the Urban Greening Program and provides the following description of the funding:

“The Urban Greening Program is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide program that puts billions of Cap-and-Trade dollars to work reducing GHG emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment – particularly in disadvantaged communities. The Cap-and-Trade program also creates a financial incentive for industries to invest in clean technologies and develop innovative ways to reduce pollution. California Climate Investments projects include affordable housing, renewable energy, public transportation, zero emission vehicles, environmental restoration, more sustainable agriculture, recycling, and much more. At least 35 percent of these investments are located within and benefiting residents of disadvantaged communities, low-income communities, and low-income households across California. For more information, visit the California Climate Investments website at: www.caclimateinvestments.ca.gov .”
